The BMW M2 Finally Adds an xDrive AWD Model for 2027 - Road & Track

It only makes sense that the BMW M2 adopts the M xDrive all-wheel drive system from the M3 and M4. We waited patiently for the automaker to do so for years—and nowm the day has finally arrived. The 2027 M2 will have an xDrive variant, and it’s exactly what you think it is.Nothing changes for the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six. It makes 473 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, the same as the rear-drive automatic M2. Yes, all M2 xDrive models will come fitted with the eight-speed auto; the six-speed manual isn’t going anywhere, but you won’t be able to spec it with all-wheel drive.You’ll have the ability to switch between AWD and RWD at the press of a button. Stability control is forced fully off when driving in RWD mode, so drifts and smoky burnouts are just a stab of the throttle away. BMW says the M2 xDrive has model-specific transfer case control unit and wheel slip limitation tuning. You get a staggered wheel and tire setup with 19s in front and 20s in rear, and “track” tires can be selected as an option, too.Acceleration numbers are predictably much better with the xDrive model now that it’s able to transfer all of inline-six’s copious power to produce forward motion. BMW’s claimed 0-60-mph time quickens by 0.3 seconds, to a scant 3.6. That’s just 0.2 second behind the M4 Competition xDrive model, and the M2 is down 50 horses compared to that coupe. Top speed is the same as other M2s at 155 mph, or 177 mph when equipped with the M Driver’s Package.The biggest downside of adding all-wheel drive is also adding weight. Curb weight sits at 3988 pounds, or 121 pounds more than a rear-drive M2 auto. That gap widens to 218 pounds when compared with the spicier M2 CS.One new (and excellent) color joins the fray for 2027, and it’s seen here as the launch spec for the xDrive model: Individual Borusan Turkish Blue. (Just note that the pictures here are of a European-spec model and are missing the "xDrive" badge on the rear our model will have.)Full 2027 model year M2 pricing isn’t out yet, but the xDrive model is slated to start at $74,950. That’s a $4600 premium over a base 2026 M2, but it’s also $18,100 less than an M4 Competition xDrive. The price sounds fair to us for how much performance xDrive adds, and we fully expect it to be a popular choice when the car goes on sale this summer.
